Lifeguard

Reports to: Lead Lifeguard, Assistant Spa, and Fitness Director, Spa and Fitness Director

Supervises: No supervisory duties are included in this position.

Classification: Non-Exempt

Job Summary

Implement all water safety policies and procedures. Supervise members and guests in and around

swimming pool.

Essential Functions

Leadership

  • Promotes a positive work culture.

Safety

  • Adequate knowledge of and training in pool chemistry, rescue, surveillance techniques, and CPR/AED
  • Always supervises and observes swimmers to ensure their safety.
  • Participates in pool safety programs and risk management.
  • Employs only those methods and teaching techniques outlined and approved by the American Red Cross.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required role in emergency situations.
  • Administers care to swimmers minor injuries such as small cuts and bruises.
  • Maintains cleanliness and safety of pool deck area.
  • Enforces rules of conduct at the pool.
  • Checks first aid supplies and reports needed items.

Operational

  • Straightens the pool and cabana areas throughout the day.
  • Maintains all necessary records determined by the Lead Lifeguard.
  • Attends all meetings as required.
  • Performs required pool pre-opening duties and closing duties.
  • Places rescue tube and ring buoy on the lifeguard chair in the morning; returns these and all swimming aids and pool toys to proper storage area at end of shift.
  • Performs other appropriate tasks assigned by the Lead Lifeguard, Assistant AD, Athletic Director.
  • Informs Lead Lifeguard about unresolved member or guest disruptions that could cause a safety problem.

Other Functions

  • Organizes and monitors pool games, suggests pool-side games.
  • Responsible for testing and certifying junior swimmers in the absence of the Lead Lifeguard.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform required role in emergency situations.
  • Assists with special events in other Club departments when necessary.
  • Responsible for scheduled shifts including early mornings, weekends, selected holidays, and evenings.
  • Attends all training sessions and regular staff meetings; researches assigned projects and topics.
  • Completes other appropriate assignments made by the Assistant S&F Director and/or S&F Director.
  • Completes other appropriate tasks as assigned by the S&F Director.
  • Communicates member comments and concerns to the Assistant S&F Director.

Education and/or Experience

  • Some High School required.
  • Ability to swim laps and swim to the bottom of the pool.

Licenses and Special Requirements

  • Must have current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification valid through Sept 5, 2023 or ability to attend blended lifeguard training course the below dates/times:
    • Thursday, May 18th 4:30-7 pm
    • Friday, May 19th 4:30-7 pm
    • Saturday, May 20th 8 am-4 pm
    • Sunday, May 21st 8 am-4 pm

Start date May 27 pending successful completion of training course.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Ability to bend, stretch, twist or reach, walk, stand, stoop, climb stairs, balance, and/or crouch.
  • Continuous repetitive motions.
  • Physical exertion over long periods of time.
  • Push, pull, and lift 100 pounds.
  • Working conditions are often, hot, humid, slippery, and wet.
  • Able to work in a busy, noisy environment.
  • Able to tolerate frequent exposure to cleaning agents.
