About Trail Blazers

Trail Blazers’ overnight camp is situated on 1000 forested acres in northwest New Jersey. Our play-based programs are designed with social emotional learning at the forefront, and focus on environmental science, experiential learning, and outdoor adventures. We hold the strong belief that every child deserves the opportunity to play, learn, and grow at camp, and our extensive scholarship program ensures that Trail Blazers is accessible for all.

Essential Functions

– Camper Recruitment: establish targets, develop recruitment strategy, cultivate relationships with families and program partners, review and respond to parent and camper feedback
– Program Development: develop and manage program budget, prepare summer programming and staff training schedules, build relationships with program partners, support seasonal staff hiring
– Summer Program Operations: take on full oversight of all aspects of day-to-day camp operations, supervise a team of seasonal directors, model productive coaching and feedback, ensure that camp is a joyful place and that campers are having experiences promised to families
– Off-Season Program Development: facilitate winter and spring programs, network with outside program providers, collaborate in the development of a new conference arm

Job Specifications

– Overnight camp administrative and leadership experience is a non-negotiable requirement
– Minimum 5 years progressively responsible managerial and supervisory experience in a camp setting
– Experience with environmental science, outdoor education, or outdoor adventure programming
– Substantial knowledge of youth/child development
– Demonstrated success cultivating environments that empower others to lead
– High level analytic, problem solving, verbal, and written communications skills
– Must meet all ACA standards for resident camp directors, including a minimum age of 25
– Willingness to live on-site in Montague New Jersey for the duration of the summer, June – August
– Current advanced CPR/first aid certification, or willingness to procure
– Ability to interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
– Ability to remain stationary for up to 70% of the work day
– Ability to move safely around the office
– Ability to climb flights of stairs
– Ability to work outside in all weather conditions
– Ability to move over rough terrain for extended periods of time
– Ability to recognize and respond to dangerous situations

The Overnight Camp Director is a proactive and hands-on leader. They are responsible for the development and direct implementation of our residential summer camp program. This is a full time, exempt position reporting to the Director of Programs. The position requires 3 months living on site at camp, with room and board provided.
