Tikchik Narrows Lodge

Job Description / Requirements

Tikchik’s head mechanic has been at Tikchik for 15 years, he is a talented mechanic and can provide supervision and knowledge to an assistant mechanic.

We are looking for an experienced outboard mechanic (Yamaha and Honda 30 and 40 horse) to maintain and repair our 34 outboard motors. Although the focus of this mechanic position is outboard motors, this position will also help in the maintenance and repair of other equipment at the lodge.

Tikchik’s operations are multi-faceted. Tikchik is a hotel, restaurant, fishing guide service, and airline. Tikchik has had the same Director of Maintenance/mechanic for 12 years. Our Director of Maintenance is also a licensed mechanic by the FAA to maintain our 4 aircraft. This position is to provide support and assist in the maintenance and repair of outboard motors, 4-wheelers, chainsaws, pumps, and general maintenance of buildings and equipment.

We don’t expect this position to have the knowledge to repair and maintain all of the equipment used at the lodge. However, they need to have experience as a mechanic, follow directions, and learn as the season progresses.  This position will also help with loading and unloading aircraft, assisting with cargo flights to and from Dillingham, etc., and be a part of the day-to-day operations.

Our staff also has time off for day adventures, fishing, hiking, and kayaking.

Friendly, good communication skills, organized, responsible, sound work ethics, service-oriented and self-motivated.

Healthy, physically fit, neat and clean appearance, drug-free, and non-smoker.

Must have a sound knowledge of basic mechanics on small engines, equipment, 4-wheelers, pumps, etc. Some experience with outboard motors is preferred but not required. Have some knowledge of “Handy Man” maintenance of building etc.

Must be available the entire season from approximately June 1st through  September 24th.

SALARY:  $ 7000.00 per month  DOE, Room and Board, Gratuities, transportation to and from Tikchik Narrows Lodge

ROOM & BOARD:  Included as part of your salary.  (This does not include personal items, toiletries, medicines, etc.)

ACCOMMODATIONS:  While at the lodge, the lodge staff will be housed in cabins or rooms with bath facilities.  Laundry facilities are provided for the crew along with bedding and towels.

EMPLOYEE MEALS:  Our staff enjoys hearty meals served buffet-style in the crew dining room.  Some of our guides and pilots will be asked to dine in the main dining room with the guests a night or two each week.  There are always snacks, cookies and other baked goods available for the staff.

TIPS/ Gratuities:  ($600.00 per month) Our guests stay for an entire week and we recommend that they do not tip during the week, but leave their tip at the end of their stay.  The tips are pooled together and divided amongst the crew equally.  Pilots, guides, chefs and lodge staff all make the same amount. Last season the gratuities were over $ 600 per week during the operating weeks when guests are present.

DATES OF EMPLOYMENT:  Be available for the entire season from approximately June 1st through late September.

TRANSPORTATION:  Transportation is provided to and from the lodge and the staff members’ home.

DAILY SCHEDULE:  Breakfast is served at 6:30 am each morning.  Our crew is expected to be at breakfast on time.  The guests depart the lodge at approximately 8:00 am each morning, heading for our fishing destinations by plane or by boat.  After the guests have departed, the manager on duty will assign duties to the ground crew for the day.  Crew lunch is served at the lodge around noon.

Each day fishermen return to the lodge between 4:30 pm and 6:00 pm.  Dinner is generally served to the guests and the crew at 7:00 pm.  When the guests return to the lodge in the evenings, we have airplanes to unload, fish to take care of, and equipment to put away.  These duties are carried out by the ground crew.  Our ground crew puts in very long days.

There may be times that the mechanic/lodge worker will assist with the following duties, depending on the availability of other crew.

Dock Duties – Assist with loading, fueling, and launching the floatplanes each morning, and catching and unloading the floatplanes each evening.

Mechanic and Maintenance  – Focus on outboard motors maintenance and repair. Assist with other mechanical duties and building maintenance and repair etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  We require our crew to present themselves in a professional manner at all times.  Our guests arrive on Saturday and depart the following Saturday.  This means that we always have guests at the lodge.  We will operate with a full guest schedule for 12 weeks straight.  The ground crew will be working on projects such as cutting wood, construction, maintenance and repairs, or whatever is necessary for the smooth operation of the lodge.

ATTITUDE:  Our ground crew position is a very high guest exposure position.  It is important that our personnel enjoy people and enjoy showing the guests a good time.  The macho man or mountain main attitude is not what we are looking for.  We would like all of our personnel to have a positive attitude, show extraordinary manners, and be courteous at all times.

SPECIAL NOTEDogs, cats and other pets are not allowed.  We do not have the accommodations or the facilities to accommodate pets.
