Calling all passionate horse trainers!

If you desire to serve in a Christian workplace and use your skills to help fulfill the mission of Youth Dynamics, this could be a great opportunity for you. The Horse Trainer position works directly with the Horse Program Manager to run Stonewater Mustangs. Responsibilities include starting Mustangs under saddle and managing the overall ride-ability of the herd. Will have some responsibility serving with summer horse adventures, seasonal rides and small guest groups. Will be expected to work as a team member with the other Stonewater staff toward the overall goals of Youth Dynamics.  We are a fun, collaborative team with opportunities to grow personally, spiritually and professionally.

Youth Dynamics Mission Statement: To invite and challenge youth to a lifelong adventure with Christ and His church.

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Start Stonewater Mustangs under saddle, assist with foundational training and prepare them for string integration
  2. Responsible for assessing overall herd readiness for horsemanship classes and trail rides
  3. Monitor and manage Mustang herd health as horses acclimate to Stonewater
  4. Assist in ensuring facility, equipment and horses are well maintained
  5. Supervise student and guest trails rides as needed
  6. Mentor local students throughout the year

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to hook up horse trailer, load horses safely and be proficient at pulling trailer
  • Skill in arena work, open field riding, and trail riding
  • Prepare and teach horsemanship, riding, and horse psychology classes
  • Maintain safety throughout every aspect of the horsemanship program
  • Maintain professional standards in dress, work attitude, and actions
  • Ability to communicate and work with students during horsemanship activities; provide necessary instruction
  • Have the ability to observe behavior while on and around horses and assess its appropriateness, enforce applicable safety and emergency procedures, and apply effective behavior management techniques
  • Assist in re-homing horses, both domestic and Mustangs, as needed
  • Experience in colt starting and overall horse training. Mustang experience is a plus

Job Requirements:

  • Experience and/or Education – Current certification by an accredited horsemanship instructor training program or minimum 2 years experience training and teaching. (Natural Horsemanship method preferred) Tip Training certification accepted.
  • Physical Requirements – Have the ability to carry 20+ pound saddles at least 25 feet and lift to the backs of 16 hand-high horses. Ability to mount and dismount their horse at least 15 times a day. May be required to frequently lift and or move up to 25-50 pounds.
  • The safety and well-being of students and staff while they are involved in various ranch activities depend on the horse trainer being able to meet the above physical demands.
  • Communication – Provide professional and timely communication with horse staff
  • Should be a positive role model to students and strive to meet spiritual, emotional, relational and physical needs of students
  • Wilderness First Aid certification required

Job Type: This position is flexible and can start seasonally, part-time or full-time.
