Job Description Summary:

BPR’s Community Programs Team provides recreation and leisure programming to Boulder’s youth (camps), people with disabilities (EXPAND) and underrepresented communities (YSI). We are looking for passionate, dedicated, and creative staff to work directly with individuals supervising and supporting them in activities while making a difference in their lives. If you are looking to build leadership skills while having fun, then this is the position for you!

This job is part time with varying hours each season based on the programs offered. Roles include being a camp counselor at summer or school day off camps and being a program staff at weekly activities and special events with people with disabilities and/or people living in low-income housing sites.

Job Description:
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assisting with Recreation and Leisure Activities for youth and teens

  • Explaining the rules of a game or activity to groups of 5-15 youth/teens
  • Promoting participation and encouraging teamwork
  • Leading parts of activities (ie lead a drill at basketball)
Supervision of Participants

  • Supervise and interact with participants with a variety of different needs and abilities
  • Actively engage with participants in activities
  • Providing 1:1 support to youth, teens and adults with disabilities as needed
  • Supervising the proper use of equipment by youth and teens
Ensure safe environment for Participants

  • Follow general safety recommendations and regulations for Community Programs Team
  • Enforce safety procedures and program rules
  • Assess emergencies and provide first aid when necessary
Behavior Management

  • Utilize behavior management/ support techniques to adequately ensure participants’ safety
  • Utilize group management skills to keep participants safe and engaged


REQUIRED CANDIDATE COMPETENCIES

  • Teamwork with other staff: Ability to work with fellow staff members to create a positive and fun experience for youth and teens in recreation programming.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to create appropriate and meaningful relationships with participants and parents. Ability to work with program leaders to appropriately and compassionately update parents on participants progress and express concerns when needed.

  • Calm Under Pressure: Ability to remain calm in high pressure situations such as seizures, allergies or behavioral incidents.
  • Enthusiasm: Ability to create a fun and engaging environment for participants.
  • Initiative: Ability to set up activities, lead groups and complete tasks when asked/directed by leaders, directors and coordinators.
  • Leadership: Ability to lead and assist in activities. Ability to direct and mentor youth and teens to be successful during the activity.


MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience and/or interest in working with youth.
  • Minimum 16 years of age
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service to participants and parents/guardians
  • Physical ability to participate in activities, run, climb, swim, lift or support the weight of children
  • Ability to evaluate conditions in assigned area and make decisions related to safety
  • Ability to communicate effectively when enforcing policies, rules and regulations
  • Willingness and ability to work as part of a team
  • Willingness to provide support to people with disabilities
  • Knowledge of sports, games and leisure activities
  • Have and maintain acceptable background information, including criminal conviction history.
  • Ability and willingness to attend and complete trainings as required, including State of Colorado Child Care requirements.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Experience working with youth, teens, people with disabilities and/or underrepresented communities in group or 1:1 settings
  • Experience leading recreation or leisure programming with youth, teens and/or adults
  • First Aid, CPR and AED Certified
  • Experience supervising groups of youth and/or teens
  • Experience working with and/or supporting people with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of injury prevention and treatment
  • Knowledge of principles and experience instructing sport, recreation, or leisure activities.
  • Bi-lingual in English/Spanish
  • Lifeguard Certified
